Google Phone confirmed by HTC insider

JB over at Crunchgear has the exclusive on the "upcoming" Google Phone, supposedly set to launch in Q1 2008. His source is someone inside HTC, the company that Google's working with to pick one of 20 models to finalize their design.
On the software side, they're going to build a special version of Google Maps (complete with GPS), as well as have Gmail and Calendar compatibility. It's most likely going to have Google Docs compatibility too, but that wasn't specified. What's even cooler is that Google Talk, their free VoIP app, will be part of the suite. The OS could be Windows Mobile 6, or it could be a Linux-based OS, which would be even more interesting.

The M500 is the world's smallest mobile phone

Designed by SMS Technology Australia and developed by one of the worlds leading and most respected mobile research and design companies.

Keeping time and keeping Contact will never be the same again. The M500 takes mobile communications to a whole new level. With over 80 hours standby time, full sms functionality, Touch Screen, full blue tooth compatibility, Dial Up Networking, Games, Mp4 Player, 128 Mb Memory,USB connectivity for software uploads, downloads, 199 number memory storage, 40 embedded real tones and its sleek sophisticated design make this the world's first truly mobile wristwatch.

The Duophone Concept Phone

No one can deny the power of 2. Two heads are supposed to be better than one. The number 2 is the smallest prime number and the only even one. It’s also the most divisible number. If that weren’t enough evidence, 2 is the number of DNA strands that make up the double helix structure. The common denominator here is the number 2 denotes cooperation and that’s where the Duofone concept begins.

The Duofone looks like any other slick concept but this time, it’s not about megapixels, or screen resolution, or even smartphone abilities. It’s about putting two of them together to combine their screen real estate. It’s about sharing each other’s battery power if one is low. It’s about increasing its abilities when paired with its partner. It even looks like a couple in bed when docked to its charging cradle.

New Fiat 500 has Windows Mobile entertainment & comms system

It turns out that Fiat, Microsoft and a components company, Magneti Marelli, jointly developed a Windows Mobile-based media and navigation system for the 500 (and other models in Fiat’s range). Called ‘Blue & Me’, it features voice activation, a dashboard screen and steering-wheel buttons, and Bluetooth to connect to a cellphone. Music can be played from anything hooked up via Bluetooth, SMS messages are read out and it functions as a hands-free kit for calls; there’s also a USB socket for you to plug in a flash memory stick with music stored on it.

Upgrades include sat-nav and enhanced communication tools, while interactive navigation services, address look-up, weather and traffic reports and even satellite theft tracking are planned for future developments. For anyone looking to make a jaded “you don’t want a BSOD when you’re doing 50km/h!” joke, rest assured that Microsoft’s involvement doesn’t go as far as the engine.
I love the look of the new 500, and I’m really looking forward to test-driving one. Personally I find the BMW Mini to be a little soulless and arrogant, whereas the Fiat is more cheeky. Rumour has it that it’ll make it to Portugal in the begining of 2008.

Nokia N95 8GB version caught in the flesh

Might Nokia be already putting its flagship N95 smartphone through an upgrade cycle? Snoopers through the Finnish company’s xml phone profile page have found reference to an all-black variant of the handset complete with a full 8GB of memory. That would certainly please those who have found the N95’s five-megapixel camera to be a decent replacement to their old digicam.
Rumour continues that the 8GB N95 will come in an all-black casing and maybe even without the GPS functionality, which seems both a shame and unlikely unless they name it a “music edition” and omit the navigation for the sake of battery life.
On that subject, here’s hoping that Nokia will be putting a higher-capacity battery pack in any future version of the phone; reviewers and users are still scathing at its short lifespan.

Vodafone selected as Apple's Euro iPhone partner?

As much fanfare as Apple's partnership with AT&T is getting stateside, there continues to be eerily little official discussion about the specifics of the iPhone's aren't going over well with Europe's major carriers. Though T-Mobile's been named as a possibility to eventually cave (or cause Apple to cave?), Credit Suisse seems to think Vodafone makes the most sense -- and now at least one retailer seems to be lending credibility to that theory. This is all super sketch, mind you -- after all, it's been widely believed that Apple would go straight to 3G for its European launch -- but phones2U now lists the 8GB iPhone (though pricing is "TBA") as being available with a handful of monthly plans. It's not out of the question for a retailer to break news like this, so we'll see what happens. upcoming European launch. The reason for the silence is a subject of some debate, but the popular theory seems to be that Apple's spoiled brat-like demands.

Nokia N74 concept

Remember the Nokia 8900 concept created by Tobias Hornof? Well the same guy is on the road again. This time he's bringing us his vision of the Nokia N74 phone.

As you can see from the image, the N74 should have simple, futuristic lines. The emphasis is on the large, possibly OLED, screen. Tobias also suggests that this kind of device simply can't use the LED for flash. There's Xenon light that produces more light, thus making better photos in the dark. Plus this device should also pack the HSDPA radio, more memory and the new platform.

Tobias drop a touchscreen in your wishlist. We want to physicaly move the photos around this large screen.

Porsche breaks into Mobile Phones - Porsche P'952

Porsche design is sleek, beautiful…iconic. They design everything from chairs to sunglasses - so why not mobile phones? Why not, indeed. Porsche is following the growing list of high-end design houses getting into the mobile phone game.
Their collaborative effort with Sagem Communications brings us the P'952 handset!
The phone was debuted in the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany - by Porsche Design Mobile Group director, Stephen Bret.

Hummer gets into Mobile Phones - Hummer HT1

Hummer, the company made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger's giant military-convert SUV (and myriad wannabe, gas-guzzling, urban-tanks), is getting into the mobile phone game with a new slider phone - the Hummer HT1.

First Porsche, now Hummer? Anyway, the Hummer HT1, much like its toy-ish, plastic-clad namesake forebears (H2 and H3, we're talking about you), comes in a variety of colors - ranging from yellow to camouflage.
The Hummer HT1 was developed by the French manufacturer, Modelabs, but sports only Hummer branding. For about 300 Euros, you get a 2.2" screen, GSM/GPRS, 2MP cam, microSD slot, and 256MB of memory. So, it looks like the phone will follow in the H2/H3's footsteps - offering a lot some of show without much go substance.

iPhone and its rivals

There's an interesting article in The Wall Street Journal discussing the iPhone and its rivals — namely Nokia N95, Samsung UpStage (F300), HTC Touch and LG Prada.
The article begins (and ends for that matter) with the Nokia N95 — the Finish handset maker's flagship "multimedia computer". Authors, Li Yuan and Amol Sharma, remind us that the N95 sports all the features of the iPhone, plus an integrated GPS and a 5 MP camera. However, the problem is that Nokia still haven't signed a deal with any carrier to distribute its smartphone in the States.
Next, authors look at the LG Prada phone, stylish all-touchscreen device that even appeared before the iPhone. Apparently, Verizon will carry this device and will be offering it as direct competitor to Apple's iPhone.
Recently announced HTC Touch is also the device to look for. As it was the case with the N95, almost all features of the iPhone come with this Windows Mobile based smartphone. Plus, HTC bundle an extra cool UI to the Touch, to make it even easier to use. Still, to date no U.S. carrier has signed a deal with HTC to offer this device. On the other hand, that could change quickly as T-Mobile is known to carry HTC devices in both Europe and in the States.
Finally, Samsung UpStage (F300) is also competing for the hearts and minds of the potential iPhone buyers. This slick device may not have all the whistles and bells, but for hundred bucks you can't get much more. Sprint also made sure that the UpStage is fully compatible with its new mobile music store, giving users the convenient way to shop for music.

And the bottom line is? Consumers will be the one that benefit the most. If the iPhone sales go strong, we can safely bet that the other carriers will push new promotions, further subsidizing handsets to make them even more appealing and affordable. Can't wait for the June 29.
What do you think?

Sony Ericsson S900i concept

What we have here is a Sony Ericsson S900i concept phone. It's not clear whether this is coming from the official Sony Ericsson or from a designer fan out there, but my bet goes for the latter.

Anyhow, if this ends up in the production, we'll have another stylish Sony Ericsson handset available on the market. The S900i should sport two cameras - one for video calls and the other, CyberShot branded for taking photos and videos. Furthermore, the rendering also suggest the large (touch?) screen and the slider form factor.

Finally, navigation buttons also look cool, and promise easy to use device. Let's keep our fingers crossed…

Willcom announced Sharp Advanced/W-ZERO3

The W-ZERO3 is Communicator-like device boasting everything a business person needs to do his work while on the go.

There's a wide 3" 480×800 screen that can render sites in their full size, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a camera, microSD expansion slot, WiFi and IrDA connectivity (no Bluetooth?).
Furthermore, this device is powered by Marvell PXA270 CPU running at 520 MHz, has 256 MB of ROM and 128 MB SDRAM, and runs Windows Mobile 6 .0 Classic Japanese edition. Considering the specs, weight of 157 g doesn't seem much.

Unfortunately, this business baby is at the moment only available in Japan, but I guess we'll see it soon hitting the Western hemisphere.
